Medicine is put in the cap of the nebulizer. After putting the medicine in, a mouth piece is put on the cap. The patient is to breathe out of his or her mouth into the mouthpiece to get the medicine once the machine is turned on. If the patient is very young and has trouble breathing through his or her mouth, the doctor will put a mask on the cap instead of the mouthpiece. With the mask, the patient can breathe either out of his or her mouth or nose. The medicine comes out in the form of cool flames. The treatment usually takes about 10 or 15 minutes. Different medicines are used on different people, and the doctor will prescribe the medicine right for you!
Hemoglobin is a red protein responsible for transporting oxygen in the blood of vertebrates. Basically, your hemoglobin is your iron level because there's so much iron contained in hemoglobin. The hemoglobin machine checks your hemoglobin count. This machine scares many kids because it requires the kids to prick their fingers. The machine needs a slide inserted into it with a drop of the patient's blood. Children should know that the needle is very very small, and it does not hurt. At the most, it seems like something pinched the tip of your finger. Having a low hemoglobin. A normal hemoglobin level is between 12 and 14. If your level is below 12, then you're anemic, and you have to take iron pills everyday. Checking hemoglobin very is important.
A CAT scan machine, also know as a CT scan machine, detects abnormal problems in your body by taking pictures of the inside. You lay on a table and the technician moves the table until the part that you need to take a picture of reaches the camera which is in the big circle. Any part that does not need to be in the CAT scan stays out of the circle.This machine can detect abnormal brain problems or abnormal stomach problems. It's very big, and you may think it may hurt you, but it won't. All it will do is take pictures of the inside of your body.
An X-ray machine is used to take pictures of your bones. It takes pictures to show if you have a fracture of abnormal problem in your bones. It can also detect pneumonia in the lungs. It looks scary when you first see it because it's so massive. You have to lay on a table under the part of the machine that actually takes the X-ray. It has a light that shines on the table you lay on, and whatever part of your body is under that light will be in the X-ray. To prevent a part of your body in the light from being in the X-ray, you need to wear a LED shield. While you're laying on the table waiting for your X-ray to be taken, the technician will take your X-ray in separate room. Then, the technician will develop your X-ray and give it to either you or your physician.
I'm sure that I do not have to tell you what a thermometer is. You probably already know on your own. A body thermometer is a machine or tool that checks body temperature. The more simple thermometers are like a long glass stick with mercury in it, and this might be the one at your house. The hotter your body temperature, the higher the mercury goes. A thermometer at the doctor's office is more advanced. This one is a machine with a probe, or the long metal stick, attached. The probe goes under your tongue, in your armpits, or in your rectum. Do they use the same probe for everyone? Well, yes. Don't say, "Gross!" just yet. The probe has a cap on it, and the cap changes every single time the patient is done taking his or her temperature. A normal body temperature is 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit or 37 degrees Celsius. The rectal temperature is the most accurate out of the three. If you measured your temperature by mouth or from your armpits, your have to add one degree to make it accurate, but you don't have to do that to the rectal temperature. Even though the rectal temperature is the most accurate, this is the least used. I don't think I have to tell you why!
Having eye problems? The ophthalmoscope is the tool the doctors use to check eyes. On the ophthalmoscope is a bright light that the doctor points at your eye to check it. It might be hard to keep your eyes open, but you have to try! The ophthalmoscope helps doctor detect external issues as well as internal problems in the eye such as internal bleeding or anything showing signs of diabetes. Yes, signs of diabetes can be detected from the eyes, and this is a big reason why doctors use an ophthalmoscope.
An otoscope is a tool used to check ears. The part that goes into your ear is at the top of the otoscope. The thin cone shaped piece goes in your ear, and the doctor can view the inside of your ear by looking at the magnifying glass on the other side of the piece at the top. If you look at the image on the left, you will get a better idea of what I am talking about. The cone shaped piece has a cap over it, and when the doctor is done with it, he throws the cap away and puts on a new one. The tool is very clean, so don't worry about getting someone else's earwax into your own ear! The otoscope can help the doctor know what's going on in your ear if you have any ear problems such as pain or hearing problems or if you just want to take that hunk of earwax out of your ear!
A stethoscope is not a machine but a tool for a doctor. A stethoscope is the most commonly used object in the medical field. Whenever you see a doctor, they will almost always have a stethoscope around their neck. A stethoscope looks kind of like a heart with a tail. At the top of the "heart", there are two ear buds that the doctor puts in his ear. At the end of the "tail" there is a circular object attached called a chestpiece which the doctor puts on your heart. By putting it on your heart, he can hear your heartbeat. This is a very helpful tool because heart and lung problems can be discovered in your body and further actions can be taken.
An audiometer is used to check your hearing. It measures your level of hearing by using 20 decibels, units used to measure the intensity of a sound or the power level of an electrical signal, at 500, 1,000, 2,000, 3,000 or 4,000 hertz, which is the SI unit of frequency. You put on a set of headphones and the doctor or nurse will change the tones.All you have to do is tell them if you can hear the tone. They will do one ear at a time. Don't worry about the volume of the machine. I promise that it will not bust your eardrums! If for any reason you cannot hear the tone, they will know you have a hearing issue, and they will either do something themselves or send you to a more experienced ear doctor, an otologist.
An oximeter measures your oxygen levels. Usually, children are not afraid of this one. All you have to do is put your finger in the clip, and it does not hurt a bit because the clip is padded on the inside. Once you put your finger in, the oximeter does its job! Usually, people with severe heart and lung problems keep an oximeter at home because their oxygen levels can drop at anytime. They have to frequently measure their oxygen levels. If your oxygen levels happens to be low and you're not a heart or lung patient, then you may experience a light head, fainting, or disorientation.
